The blade in detail
Every piece is unique, hand-forged
Description
Kanoya, in Kagoshima prefecture, has always been tied to the martial tradition of Kyushu — land of southern samurai, hard tempering and some of the oldest forges in Japan. The Kanoya Wakizashi evokes this southern school, where sobriety took precedence over ornament.
The 1060 carbon steel blade has the classic restrained sori curvature typical of the wakizashi, a nagasa of roughly 50 cm, and a geometry that favors rigidity over decorative slenderness. It is designed for serious combat, not ceremony. Hand-sharpened, 58-60 HRC hardness, central balance.
Everything else is consistent with this functional intent: a tsuka in tight black ito over dark samegawa, an iron tsuba with simple openwork, and a matte lacquered wooden scabbard without maki-e or engravings. The matte horn koiguchi and raw bamboo mekugi complete a mounting free of frills.
A piece for those who appreciate the spartan aesthetics of battle swords rather than ceremonial decoration, a gift for enthusiasts of the Kyushu martial schools (Jigen-ryu, Yakumaru-ryu), a companion to a warrior-style katana, or a decorative piece for private studies where sobriety is a virtue. A wakizashi that does not ask to be admired — only to be wielded.
