Guide to the Katana and the Samurai Sword — Learn more
The katana: the soul of the samurai
The katana is Japan’s traditional curved sword, symbol of the samurai caste since the Muromachi period (14th century). Recognizable by its single-edged curved blade of about 70–80 cm, the katana was for centuries a battlefield weapon, a ritual object and a mark of noble status. Today it is one of the most sought-after collector’s items in the world, prized for its refined aesthetics and the craftsmanship its forging demands.
Traditional forging: from tamahagane to hamon
Every authentic samurai sword is born of a three-stage forging process: the forge (repeated hammering of the steel to remove impurities), the differential hardening (quenching the blade in water after applying a clay coating, which creates the distinctive hamon, the temper line visible along the edge) and finally the mirror polish, performed by hand with stones of increasing hardness. Our katanas faithfully reproduce this thousand-year-old process.
Steels for every need
- 1060 / 1095 carbon steel: the steel of functional katanas, with excellent edge retention and impact resistance. Ideal for tameshigiri and for collectors looking for an authentic blade.
- Damascus steel: forged from hundreds of layers of different steels, it displays a unique flowing pattern on the surface of the blade. Highly decorative, it is the choice of discerning enthusiasts.
- T10 steel: a high-carbon, silicon-alloyed steel prized for its superior hardness and for the hamon that appears naturally after quenching.
- Manganese steel: used for special finishes such as black or amethyst-colored blades, for decorative katanas with maximum visual impact.
Types of Japanese swords
- Katana: the long sword (~70–80 cm), worn edge-up through the belt (obi).
- Wakizashi: the short sword (~30–60 cm), companion of the katana in the daishō, worn together by the samurai.
- Tanto: the ritual dagger (~15–30 cm), used for ceremonies and close defense.
- Ninjato: the sword of the ninja, generally straighter than the katana with a shorter blade.
- Nodachi and Odachi: longer field swords, reserved for great masters.
Razor-sharp or display versions
Our katanas are available both as battle-ready, hand-sharpened blades made of tempered steel and as blunt display versions designed for exhibition, decoration and cosplay. Each piece is finished with the same care down to the smallest detail — choose the version that matches how you intend to enjoy it.
Components of the samurai sword
- Tsuba: the decorated guard, often in brass, iron or alloy, with traditional motifs (dragons, sakura blossoms, Buddhist symbols).
- Tsuka: the handle covered in genuine ray skin (samegawa) and wrapped with silk or cotton cord (ito).
- Saya: the lacquered wooden scabbard, often finished with horn, Japanese lacquer or inlays.
- Sageo: the decorative cord that secures the scabbard to the belt.
- Habaki, seppa, fuchi, kashira: the small metal fittings that complete the traditional mounting.
Who our collection is for
Our samurai swords are made for: collectors looking for unique, authentic pieces; fans of Japanese culture, manga and anime (One Piece, Demon Slayer, Bleach); practitioners of traditional martial arts; and anyone searching for an original, precious gift for a birthday, graduation or anniversary.
Katana maintenance
To preserve the beauty of your samurai sword, we recommend regularly applying a dedicated oil (chōji oil or neutral mineral oil) to the blade, storing it in its saya in a dry environment, and avoiding direct finger contact with the blade (moisture can oxidize carbon steel).
Shipping and warranty
We ship all our katanas worldwide by express courier, in reinforced packaging. Every piece is covered by a warranty against manufacturing defects. In-stock models ship within 48–72 working hours.
