The blade in detail
Every piece is unique, hand-forged
Description
Amaterasu Ōmikami is the sun goddess of Shinto mythology and the ancestor of the Japanese imperial house. When she shut herself away in the cave of Amano-Iwato, the world plunged into darkness; the other kami had to trick her into coming out. The story explains the origin of eclipses and of the rituals for calling back the sun. The Amaterasu Katana captures this quality of divine radiance.
The T10 steel blade (60-62 HRC hardness, nagasa of roughly 70 cm) bears a genuine wavy hamon. The tsuka is wrapped over genuine ray skin (authentic samegawa): its natural relief beneath the ito wrapping provides a visually rich texture, a reference to the scales of the personified sun.
The mounting embraces the solar palette: vermilion red ito (the color of the torii dedicated to Amaterasu) over authentic samegawa, a burnished gold tsuba with an eight-rayed sun motif, a saya lacquered in bordeaux red with golden bands at both ends, and a mustard-colored sageo. Burnished gold habaki.
A piece for ceremonial home settings, a decorative piece for Shinto-inspired altars, or a gift for anyone who has visited Ise Jingu (the shrine dedicated to Amaterasu) or for lovers of comparative mythology. A katana that brings sunlight into your home.
