Hibana Katana (T10 Steel with Hitatsura Hamon)

The hibana is the spark that leaps from burning coal or from a working forge: a brief flash of light lasting a fraction of a second before dying out. In the print workshops of Edo, artisans used the hibana metaphor to describe momentary inspiration. The Hibana Katana captures this quality of creative flash.

The T10 steel blade (60-62 HRC hardness, nagasa of roughly 70 cm) bears a genuine hitatsura hamon: one of the most spectacular variants of differential hardening, in which islands of hard steel spread across the entire width of the blade like scattered sparks.

The mounting embraces the spark palette: warm orange ito over dark samegawa, a patinated iron tsuba with a motif of three luminous points arranged in a triangle (sparks in flight), a black lacquered saya scattered with small orange-gold dots, and a copper-colored sageo. Coppered habaki.
